Samai Rice (Panicum sumatrense), sometimes known as tiny millet, is a millet species belonging to the Poaceae family. This cereal is similar to proso millet in terms of dependence, although it is much smaller. These are spread across Asia’s temperate zones, including the Caucasus, China, and East Asia, as well as the continent’s tropics, including India, Indochina, and Malaysia.
Little millet, often known as samai rice, is extremely nutritious. Finger millet has the highest calcium content (300-350 mg per 100 g), while other tiny millets are high in phosphorus and iron. Protein content varies between 7 and 12 percent, whereas fat content varies between 1 and 5.0 percent. The amino acid composition of millet protein is well-balanced, with enough methionine, cystine, and lycine. These essential amino acids are especially beneficial to persons who get their protein from plant foods. The millet grain contains about 65 % carbohydrate, with a large portion of it in the form of non-starchy polysaccharides and nutritious fiber.
Samai Rice Advantages
- Samai has been found to have the highest fiber content of any grain. Its crude fiber level is nearly twice as high as that of other grains.
- Samai is high in phenolic chemicals, which have antioxidant properties.
- This millet is an excellent source of iron. For an adult male, one meal (30 g) can provide 16 percent of his daily iron requirements.
- Samai is gluten-free, much like other millets. It compensates for Celiac (gluten-free) diets’ lack of whole grain fiber.
- Samai has a low to medium glycaemic index, making it suitable for diabetics.
- The essential amino acids Histidine, Methionine, and Phenylalanine are abundant.
